Taper Cutting in Lathe

TAPER CUTTING IN LATHE MACHINE

A taper is defined as a uniform increase or decrease in diameter of a piece of work measured along its length. In a lathe machine, taper turning means to produce a conical surface by gradual reduction in diameter from a cylindrical job.

A taper is generally turned in a lathe by feeding the tool at an angle to the axis of rotation of the work piece. The angle formed by the path of the tool with the axis of the work piece should correspond to the half taper angle. A taper can be turned by anyone of the following methods:

1. By Swivelling the Compound Rest.
2. By Setting Over the Tailstock Centre.
3. By a Broad Nose form Tool.
4. By a Taper Turning Attachment.

Basic Understanding: Taper Turning Attachment

Taper Turning Attachment Method

Preet Lathe Udyog offers Taper Turning Attachment as standalone as well as with the Lathe Machine. This method is commonly employed for generating external tapers only.

In this method, the taper turning attachment is bolted back of the lathe machine. It has guide bar which may be set at any desired angle or taper. As the carriage moves along the bed length aside over bar causes the tool to move in and out according to setting of the bar. The taper setting on the bar is duplicated on the job or work. The merit of this method is that the lathe centers are kept in alignment.

Taper Turning Attachment

Taper Turning Attachment in Lathe

The advantage of this method is that long tapers can be machined & is offered by Preet Lathe . As power feed can be employed, the work is completed at a shorter time.

Preet Lathe manufacturers taper attachment consists of a bracket which is attached to the rear end of the lathe bed. It supports a guide bar pivoted at the center. The bar having graduation in
degrees may be swiveled on either side of the zero graduation and set at the desired angle
to the lathe axis. A guide block is mounted on the guide bar and slides on it. The cross slide
is made free from its screw by removing the binder screw. The rear end of the cross slide
is tightened with the guide block by means of a bolt. When the longitudinal feed is engaged,
the tool mounted on the cross slide will follow the angular path as the guide block will slide
on the guide bar set at an angle of the lathe axis. The depth of cut is provided by the compound
slide which is set parallel to the cross-slide. All Geared Lathe Machine are offered with Taper Turning Attachment.
